To show our support, respect and honor to our local first responders and military personnel, HOSA will host three Days of Service during the 9/11 weekend that will culminate with a 5k Run, a benefit concert and multi-faceted, park-wide day of service at the historic USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park.
9/11/11 | Birmingham, AL
HOB will be offering a free showing of the documentary, "New York Says Thank You" at our local Imax Theater. We will have small onsite projects that are family friendly and tie in with the film and 9/11. We hope to have local firemen and police officers in attendance, as well as the mayor of Birmingham.

2:30-4:30pm - Family Friendly Portable Projects
5:00-6:00pm - 9/11 Tribute at the Riverwalk Amphitheater
9/11 signature project will be held at Union Station Train Shed and Riverwalk Amphitheater in downtown Montgomery. The signature event on Sunday will include multiple family friendly service projects, safety training, disaster awareness and preparedness information to benefit disabled and homeless veterans, seniors, youth and at-risk families. A mock disaster drill will be held in a cooperative effort with Montgomery City/County’s EMA (Emergency Management Agency), Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT), City of Montgomery first responders including the Fire Department and Police Department. The Southern Baptist Disaster Response Team and Governor's Office of Faith Based & Community Initiatives will provide information, activities for children and education booths during the afternoon. The 9/11 Signature Tribute at the Amphitheater will honor those who lost their lives on 9/11 and in the April 2011 tornado outbreaks. Chief Lawrence Schultx, Incident Commander and Operations Section Chief with the National Capital Region Incident Management Team will be the featured speaker.

Volunteers will be putting in a new playground next to Fire Station 218, stuffing and passing out fire safety information, painting curb numbers and hosting a disaster preparedness fair for the neighborhood. Volunteers are invited to join us at 6:30am for a special Pancake Breakfast hosted by Fire Station 218. This is going to be a very special project and a very unique and important way to commemorate this special day.

On Sunday, September 11, hundreds of veterans and their families, active service members, and community volunteers will come together to revitalize an airplane hangar into a welcoming space for Tomorrow’s Aeronautical Museum (TAM) to use as a community center, interactive children's museum, great hall for Compton city events, and home to its after-school mentoring program called Positive Vibrations.

HOBA will host 500 first responders, veterans and volunteers at the historic Veterans War Memorial Building in San Francisco's centrally located civic center.
Mayor and other local leaders will attend and speak at the 20 minute commemoration ceremony. A local opera singer will perform the Star Spangled Banner. After the remembrance, 100 volunteers will work on site on a variety of projects and 400 will walk to nearby locations to serve on other tributes.

Volunteers will create no sew scarves that will be given to the United States Veterans Initiative (U.S. VETS), an organization that provides programs and services to military veterans and their families. Once volunteers assemble the fleece no sew scarves, they will attach them with an awareness ribbon.

Volunteers will create organic seed globes consisting of flower seeds, compost and soil. Once the seed globes are assembled, volunteers will take them home to then be planted in their neighborhoods where they can begin their own community flower gardens.

Volunteers will create educational foam board math puzzles that consist of equations and math problems for elementary and middle school students. Once 3 assembled, the puzzles will be packaged into easy to carry kits and given to local schools across Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia.
